Sunny Side of the Doc Returns with a New Focus on Global Documentary Storytelling (2026)

The Sunny Side of the Doc, an international documentary marketplace, is set to return for its 37th edition, marking a significant recovery from its near-cancellation. The event, held in La Rochelle, France, faced a critical juncture when a key European grant was threatened, leading to a potential shutdown. However, the recognition of its importance to the global documentary community played a pivotal role in its revival.

The Centre National du Cinéma (CNC), a French cultural agency, stepped in with financial support, and Documentary Campus, a nonprofit media training organization, partnered with Sunny Side to ensure its survival. This collective effort highlights the understanding of the event's value in fostering documentary storytelling and addressing the challenges posed by conflicts, disinformation, and polarization worldwide.

Aurélie Reman, the managing director of Sunny Side, emphasizes the importance of a dedicated documentary market with global reach. She believes that the near-cancellation served as a wake-up call, underscoring the need for a stronger advocacy for documentary storytelling. Reman suggests that the industry must become more agile and collaborative, exploring new financing models and partnerships to sustain its growth.

The 37th edition of Sunny Side will focus on delivering market intelligence to independent producers and distributors, providing them with the strategic insights they need to navigate the industry. With a reduced scope, the event aims to cater to the 2,000 professionals expected to attend from Europe, the U.S., and beyond.

One of the key aspects of this year's Sunny Side is the introduction of the Copro HUB, a platform designed to facilitate co-production meetings and speed dating between buyers and distributors. This initiative aims to foster collaboration and enable over 100 new documentary projects to find the right partners. Case studies will be presented daily, showcasing successful international co-productions and providing valuable insights into the industry.

The documentary film 'Mr. Nobody Against Putin' stands out as a remarkable example of successful international collaboration. Produced by BBC Storyville, Made in Copenhagen, ZDF/Arte, and Pink Productions, the film won the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature. Helle Faber, the producer of the film, will share her experiences and insights during a keynote address at Sunny Side, offering a candid view of the evolving documentary market.

The event will also feature a keynote speech by Ben Zand, the founder and CEO of Zandland. Zand will explore the relationship between creators and audiences in the current media landscape, emphasizing the importance of building lasting engagement. With the rise of high-quality content creators on platforms like YouTube, the convergence of TV and digital media is a significant trend that Sunny Side aims to address.

Reman highlights the role of YouTube as a distribution platform for documentary makers, despite its challenges. She believes that understanding and leveraging YouTube's potential is crucial for both creators and traditional players in the industry. By bridging the gap between traditional media and digital platforms, Sunny Side aims to support the documentary community and ensure its continued growth and relevance.
